I your Tesla ended up stranded on the side of the road and needed to be towed, it would be covered under the automaker's roadside assistance program but only for up to 50 miles. Unfortunately, if you live in a state without a Tesla dealer, that doesn't amount to much. But that's all changed, as the company recently expanded its tow distance.
Now Tesla will cover tows up to 500 miles as part of its roadside assistance offering, which covers every new Tesla (Model Xor Model S ) for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. If there's an issue with your battery or drive system, that coverage expands to eight years and unlimited miles.
Of course, there are some caveats. This distance doesn't apply if you crash your car , and according to Tesla's Fine Print it also won't apply if you're locked out or have a flat tire. That 500-mile limit only applies to "warrantable issues" -- in other words, things that could reasonably be covered under the new vehicle warranty.
You can still get towed farther than 500 miles if necessary. But the cost beyond the first 500 is on you.
